Things to See & Do

Limestone Creek Aqueduct

Historic Lime Kiln Remnants

As you bike south along the Fayetteville Feeder Trail, look to your left to see remnants of the old Fayetteville Lime Kilns. These were a key component of Canal activity. The limestone in this area has a peculiar chemical composition that carries through to the lime that is produced therefrom. When that lime is used to make cement, the cement is able to harden underwater, thus, the term "hydraulic cement", and that's particularly useful for constructing locks and aqueducts. Before the discovery of the local limestone characteristics, lime had to be imported at considerable expense.

The kilns date to 1820. The Feeder was dug by NYS in 1826 to provide water for the enlarged Canal and making it easier to obtain the lime.  Once the Feeder was in place the Village of Fayetteville grew immensely from support industries such as a blacksmith shop, a saw mill, various storehouses, a barrel-making shop, cement and plaster mills, etc.

Parks & Trails

Canal Landing Park

This park, located near the Fayetteville Feeder Trail, features a playground, outdoor exercise equipment, restrooms, picnic tables, and benches.

Green Lakes State Park

Access this breathtaking landscape by crossing the bridge marked "Green Lakes State Park" and following the trail across Route 290 and into the park. Green Lakes State Park's outstanding features are its two glacial lakes surrounded by upland forest. Both Round and Green Lakes are meromictic lakes, which means that there is no fall and spring mixing of surface and bottom waters. Such lakes have a high potential for evidence of ancient plant and animal life. Restrooms, picnic areas, campsites, nature trails, concessions, boat rentals, disc golf, swimming access, and an 18 hole golf course are available here.  https://parks.ny.gov/parks/172
